About Hus

What?

Hus is a THOW (Tiny House On Wheels) project built in Waikato, NZ. It is designed to be an off-grid, low footprint, transportable form of accommodation which is still practical and comfortable to live in. Design criteria as follows:

  • Must be off-grid capable. We decided that this meant solar electricity generation, solar/wetback hot water, a wood burner for heating, and the ability to collect rainwater.

  • It must fit within the NZTA’s definition of a light simple trailer, so that it can be towed by a normal vehicle on a normal license. This meant both size and weight restrictions had to be followed.

  • It should be as compliant as possible with the NZ Building Code. This was both to ensure a good build quality, and also to reduce the work involved in getting consent should we ever want to permanently site the building and get rid of the trailer (the trailer has been designed with this in mind too).

Why?

  • The challenges involved in designing and building such a project seemed like fun.

  • We think that people generally have too much stuff. Living in a THOW forces you to live with less stuff. We liked that.

  • We could not justify the cost of real estate in NZ at the time, and wanted to avoid the risks involved in holding that much debt.

  • Because it’s pretty much a tree house for grown-ups.

When?

We’re looking to be finished by (southern hemisphere) winter 2018.

Where?
